What Is Satvik Food?

Satvik comes from the Sanskrit word Sattva, meaning purity, clarity, and harmony. In the three gunas (qualities), Sattva represents lightness and balance.

Traditional Meaning

According to classical texts such as the Bhagavad Gita, Sattvic foods increase life, purity, strength, health, happiness, and contentment. They are juicy, smooth, and pleasing — foods that nourish without creating heaviness or restlessness.

In Ayurveda, these foods help maintain healthy Agni (digestive fire) and reduce the formation of Ama (toxins). They are typically vegetarian, freshly prepared, and made with gentle spices.
